How to Adopt a Pet from Missoula County Animal Control

A note on cats: The cat room at the shelter (4700 Butler Creek Rd) is open Monday through Friday, 12 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturday 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. An appointment is not necessary to view a cat at this location. Some cats are also held at the PetSmart on Reserve St., and are available to meet during open hours.

A note on dogs: Dogs are available to meet at the shelter during the hours listed above. However, if the lobby is very busy a shelter attendant might not be able to bring the dog out right away. We suggest that you call us (406-541-7387) to schedule a meeting. 

A completed application is required for all animals, regardless of whether or not you've met the animal.

 

Adoption Process

1. Search our adoption listing for animals currently available for adoption.

2. If you see an animal you wish to adopt, complete the adoption application form and email it to animalcontrol@missoulacounty.us. If you have questions, call us at 406-541-7387.

3. Wait for a phone call or email. We will review interest forms on a first come, first served basis. Our review process typically takes 1-2 business days, after which we will begin calling interested adopters. If the prospective adopter is no longer interested, or fails to answer the phone, we will move on to the next entry.

During this phone call, we will determine if an animal is a good match for you and your household. We will also discuss the animal’s medical history, the adoption contract, and any pet supplies you may need. Other factors related to your application include: landlord approval if you are a renter, if current dogs are licensed at your residents, and if multiple pet permits are needed if you currently have more than two dogs within the city limits.

If an animal you are interested in is no longer available for adoption, we will contact you via email.

4. Place the animal on hold and schedule an adoption appointment. If you decide to adopt the animal, we will place the animal on hold for you over the phone.

Once your adoption appointment is scheduled, we will begin to prepare the animal to go home with you.

5. Complete the adoption and pick up your new pet.  Your animal will be ready to meet you, and we will complete all necessary adoption.

  3. Save the form by going to File > Save As > then type your last-name-dd-mm-yyyy
  4. Send an email to animalcontrol@missoulacounty.us and attach the Adoption form from your system and submit
