The Missoula Valley Water Quality District was created by joint resolution between the City of Missoula and the Missoula Board of County Commissioners in 1993.
Our Mission: To protect and improve surface and ground
water quality within the Missoula Valley.
What we do:
- Annual monitoring of 44 dedicated monitoring wells and the 6 major streams within the district.
- Monitoring and water quality research to assess and prioritize water quality issues.
- Inspections of businesses that maintain quantities and types of hazardous materials that could contaminate impact soil or water resources.
- Enforcement of state water quality laws and local ordinances.
- Public education on prevention of water pollution.
- Local review of state and federal cleanup sites.
- Household hazardous waste collection (year-round facility coming soon)
- Maintaining a public health laboratory for water research and contaminant investigation
- 24-7 Hazardous material response
Current Projects:
- Channel Migration Zone Analysis
- Frenchtown/Touchette Lane Study
- Staff our currently monitoring water levels and bacteria in residential wells in this area. If you are interested in participating in the study, please email us.
- O'Keefe Creek/Wye Study
- Following reports of recent changes in groundwater elevations, the District is conducting a combination of monthly and real-time water level monitoring of approximately 50 wells and surface water in 3 locations on O'Keefe Creek.
