Home MenuMissoula Drug Safety Coalition
The Missoula Drug Safety Coalition, originally called the Missoula Prescription Drug Task Force, is housed under Missoula Public Health. The aim of this collaborative group is to create a community where opioid and drug overdoses are significantly reduced, paving the way for a safer and healthier environment for all.
The group has representatives from the medical and public health field; treatment, harm reduction, and recovery organizations; as well as other concerned organizations and citizens. The group utilizes a multi-pronged approach to educate the community at large about:
- The potential dangers of misusing prescription drugs and opioids, such as poisoning, overdose, and opioid use disorder, as well as how to prevent and respond to these conditions.
- The importance of being ready to reverse an opioid-related overdose, including having access to the life-saving opioid overdose reversal drug, Naloxone (also known as Narcan or Evzio) and being trained to use it.
- Do you want to carry Naloxone? You can purchase Naloxone at any pharmacy in Montana with your insurance (even without a prescription from your doctor - under the Montana Standing Order for Naloxone Opioid Antagonists) or you can get Naloxone for free from Open Aid Alliance.
- Want to get a training for you and your staff? Go here to find out how.

Safe and environmentally-friendly medication and syringe disposal
- To safely dispose of unused and expired medications :
- do not simply put them in the garbage, flush them down the toilet or wash down any drain.
- check the disposal instructions on the label first. Some medications have specific instructions for how to get rid of them
- take them to a prescription drug take-back event;
- or use a medication disposal bag or mix with kitty litter or coffee grounds to dispose safely at home (this discourages kids and animals from ingesting the drugs);
- or take them to a local drop box. Locations in Missoula county are listed below.
