If sewage has surfaced, the area must be disinfected immediately with lime and fenced off to prevent people, pets, livestock, and pests from coming into contact with it, thus potentially contracting and spreading illness. Lime can be purchased at most garden supply stores. It is very caustic, and should be handled according to directions. Spread the lime on the affected area until it is uniformly white. The lime must be covered with soil, or another method that adequately prevents humans or animals from contacting the effluent and/or lime. Temporary fencing must be set up around all areas that have been contaminated. This can be accomplished in any reasonable manner, but it is important to realize that sewage contains many microorganisms, and often times pathogens that could cause illness.
