Mission Statement

Missoula County Sheriff’s Office Cold Case Unit, established in 2019, investigates unsolved homicides within the jurisdiction of Missoula County. The team has also been made available, when requested, to neighboring law enforcement agencies and other jurisdiction in the state of Montana. Currently the team is assisting on several cases across the state.

The squad consists of retired Federal law enforcement officers both from the FBI and Homeland Security.

A part of the task of the Cold Case Unit is to review old evidence with a view to using newer technology. For example, some homicides occurred before the advent of DNA, or at least before it had advanced to its present level. The team also employs modern computer technology, along with old-fashioned police work.

It has been found that witnesses who were previously reluctant to cooperate, are more willing after several years, when contacted. Cold Case detectives are always anxious to locate these persons.
