Annual Notice Information

I received a green postcard about jury service, what does that mean?

IS YOUR POSTCARD GREEN AND SAYS "JUSTICE COURT"? YOU ARE IN THE RIGHT PLACE!  If it says "District Court" and is a hot pink postcard you are in the wrong place. Click here if you have a pink postcard.

You have been selected for Missoula County Justice Court jury service for the 2024 jury term. The jury term begins July 1, 2024 and ends June 30, 2025.

What do I need to do with this postcard about jury service?

NO RESPONSE IS REQUIRED OF YOU AT THIS TIME! Should you be randomly selected to appear for a jury trial, you will receive a summons packet in the mail and be asked to respond at that time.

This notice is not a summons to report for a specific date.  When you are needed to serve on a specific trial, you will be notified with a jury summons by mail. If, during this jury term you appear at the courthouse twice for jury selection and are not chosen or you appear and are selected as one of the jurors to serve on a case, you may request to be excused for the balance of this term.

Why was I chosen for potential jury service?

The law provides that all citizens 18 years of age or older, who are residents for at least 30 days of the state and of the city, town or county in which they are called for jury service, and who are citizens of the United States are eligible for jury service.  Jurors are selected from a combined list of active registered voters, licensed drivers or holders of Montana ID cards.

Many times after you have been selected for a particular case, the case settles before the time you are ordered to report.  You may check the status of the trial for which you have been summoned to report at any time by calling our office at 406-258-3470.  We will attempt to notify you if the trial settles to avoid your having to report.

Residents should only receive a notice from one of the courts. If you receive more than one notice, contact the Clerk of District Court at 406-258-4797 or email dcjury@missoulacounty.us. (Note though that the federal court system has a separate system for selecting potential jurors.)
